WellSpan Adams Cancer Center and Gettysburg Hospital earned a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Cancer. CoC is a program of the American College of Surgeons. The accreditation recognizes the quality of comprehensive cancer care available to Adams County residents.

As a CoC-accredited cancer center, the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center is recognized for taking a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.  This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

“This accreditation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing excellent care to all of our patients in Adams County and northern Maryland,” said Douglas Arbittier, M.D., M.B.A., vice president of oncology services at WellSpan Health.

“We are dedicated to working together across different services and specialties to provide the most comprehensive care for cancer patients in our local communities. This designation substantiates our efforts to provide outstanding care to everyone we serve.”

The WellSpan Adams Cancer Center is located within the WellSpan Adams Health Center at 40 V-Twin Drive. It is part of the health system’s regional network of five cancer centers. Each center offers a team of highly trained, board-certified oncology specialists and clinical staff committed to providing clinically excellent, patient-focused, state-of-the-art care, and comprehensive support services for patients.

The cancer center provides patients advanced cancer treatment options, access to genetic counseling and clinical research trials. It provides comprehensive support services such as a nurse navigator, nutritional counseling, financial assistance and psychosocial support.

To earn CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

The CoC accreditation is the most recent third-party designation for the WellSpan Adams Cancer Center. The center has also earned the unique distinction of being accredited since 2012 by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. That program also administered by the American College of Surgeons. In addition, the WellSpan Radiation Oncology practice was recently accredited by the American College of Radiology.
