SHIPPENSBURG — August 8th is the big day! The James Burd Community Playground Build will occur that Thursday.
But to make it successful, organizers are seeking community volunteers ages 18 and older to help with the build.
All volunteers are welcome since little to no experience is necessary.
The updates to the playground at the James Burd Elementary School has been a community effort that has involved businesses and organizations as well as ordinary citizens.
The need for a safe, updated playground was obvious from the beginning.
Existing equipment consisted of wooden structures that are over 30 years old and inadequate for student use. The old equipment housed bees, wasps often caused students to get splinters. Additionally, the structures had limited capacity And were not meeting the needs of today’s students.
Other problems included limited sensory, therapeutic and inclusive play equipment. The focus in renovating the playground was to include more inclusive play opportunities for all students at James Burd Elementary School and within the greater Shippensburg Community.
Thanks to the generosity of multiple local businesses and organizations, the playground committee secured the necessary funding to move forward with a new playground. The demolition of the old equipment has already begun.
If the committee gets enough volunteer help to put the new equipment together and install it, the new playground should be ready for students by the first day of school.
The playground committee is now looking for additional donations to secure rubber mulching beneath the playground equipment.
