Why is the Master Gardener plant sale different than others?
- Heirloom and unique varieties, most not offered at garden centers, are grown in the greenhouse.
- The timing of the sale offers the best time to plant in our area. In south-central Pennsylvania, the last frost date is May 12 and soil temperatures are not likely to be warm enough until mid-May. Check our Blog Note about soil temperature. With the Perennial and Greenhouse Sale, the third Saturday in May customers can transplant with no need to hold plants until the last frost date or soil warms up.
- Locally grown plants, nurtured by Master Gardeners in their Franklin County home landscapes, have been divided, carefully potted and overwintered, or held, in an outdoor area. Plants offered for sale will have survived the recent winter season and be ready to transplant.
- Master Gardeners are available to offer assistance for choosing among the plants offered plus provide tips on the best way to plant and care for those selected.
Proceeds from this fundraiser support Master Gardener projects including enhancing and maintaining seven demonstration gardens (Open to the public dawn to dusk all year), providing material for community outreach programs to libraries, schools and community events and supporting the Help Line (call in for home gardening questions and information) with publications and materials for the public.
