FRANKLIN COUNTY— If alcohol will be part of your Memorial Day weekend celebration, think twice before you get behind the wheel.
The Franklin County DUI Task Force will conduct patrols targeting impaired drivers this weekend as part of Pennsylvania’s participation in a National DUI Enforcement crackdown for the Memorial Day weekend.
The DUI Task Force includes the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s six local police departments: Washington Township police, Waynesboro police, Greencastle police, Shippensburg police, Mercersburg police, and Chambersburg police.
In 2017, 10,874 people were killed in drunk driving crashes, almost a third of all traffic fatalities nationwide. To put it in perspective, that’s equal to about 20 jumbo jets crashing, with no survivors.
On average, one person was killed in a drunk driving crash every 48 minutes.
The message police are sending with the campaign: Don’t drink and drive, arrive alive.
